Three steps save a public story
Do it while the ring is still showing.
- Open the storyTap the ring around the creator’s profile photo, in your Following feed or on their profile.
- Copy the linkTap the Share arrow, then Copy link.
- Paste it above and press Save storyThe story saves as an MP4 video in your Downloads folder.
Your own stories save straight from the TikTok app
Creators have two built-in options before they need a downloader.
While the story is live
Open it, tap the three dots in the corner, then Save video. It goes to your camera roll.
After the 24 hours
TikTok moves expired stories into a private archive, which you’ll find in Settings and privacy. Open a story there, tap the three dots and choose Post as video to put it on your profile for good.
Stories fail to save for four reasons
The first one catches most people.
- The 24 hours are up. Expired stories can’t be opened by viewers, so they can’t be saved.
- The account is private. Only stories from public accounts work.
- The creator deleted it early. A deleted story disappears straight away.
- The link didn’t copy in full. Open the story again and use Share, then Copy link.
Stories and regular videos work differently
The difference that matters most is the clock.
Stories need extra care because they’re meant to disappear
The creator chose a format that deletes itself.
Keeping a story forever goes against that choice. Save one only when it’s yours or you’ve asked first.
- Never repost someone’s story as your own.
- Never use a saved story to track, embarrass or pressure a person.
- Ask before you share a friend’s story outside TikTok.
